Establishing an integrated production system from semiconductor substrate growth to LED packaging for Stanley Electric 265 nm wavelength UVC LED technology

Stanley Electric Co., Ltd. (Head office: 2-9-13 Nakameguro, Meguro-ku, Tokyo; President: Takanori Kitano) recently announced its establishment of an integrated production system that covers every stage of UVC LED production, from semiconductor substrate growth to LED packaging, within the Stanley Group. At 265 nm, UVC LEDs offer the world's highest level of sterilization performance.

Stanley Electric already possessed the LED chip manufacturing processes*1 and aluminum nitride (AlN) semiconductor substrate growth processes*2 (Stanley Electric press release dated Dec. 5, 2019) that utilize related patents, know-how, and development and production facilities (Stanley Electric press release dated Jan. 31, 2017).
Fully in-housing the formation process for AlN films*3, which serve to increase output, now enables the Group to handle all of the processes in-house and therefore to stably produce better products at lower cost.

In a press release dated August 7, 2020, we also announced we have confirmed that Stanley Electric 265 nm wavelength UVC LEDs are highly effective for inactivating SARS-CoV-2.
Following this announcement, the results of evaluation tests conducted in collaboration with Yamaguchi University (Dr. Daisuke Hayasaka and Dr. Hiroshi Shimoda, Laboratory of Veterinary Microbiology, Joint Faculty of Veterinary Medicine) regarding the effectiveness of three wavelengths (254 nm, 265 nm, and 280 nm) for inactivating SARS-CoV-2 confirmed that 254 nm and 265 nm wavelengths are 1.8 times more effective than 280 nm wavelengths.

Stanley Electric is expanding this business with the aim of applying these highly effective 265 nm UVC LEDs and 254 nm cold cathode ultraviolet lamps to a variety of applications, including air and surface sterilization to control various types of viral infections, and water sterilization to ensure safe drinking water.
